Innovative small firms ignored by Whitehall

One small company's attempts to cut the £35m a year cost of running the
Businesslink.gov.uk advice website have been rebuffed by HM Revenue &
Customs. Fubra, a website developer and hosting company, had spotted that
Businesslink was costing the Government £4.7m a year alone in "hosting and
infrastructure" – a sum that it could slash significantly.

David Cameron backs entrepreneurs as self employment rises

The Prime Minister has urged "more people to make a job rather than take a
job" at the launch of a week of events across the country to encourage
people to set up businesses. Business Secretary Vince Cable backed David
Cameron's focus on self-employment and small business creation during
Global Entrepreneurship Week UK (GEW), pledging to tackle "onerous
regulations and taxes" to encourage entrepreneurial activity that he said
generates economic growth and jobs. "Self employment grows into small
companies, small companies grow into large companies. Entrepreneurship
Week is about how we get that pipeline working," he said.

Warning over anti-virus cold calls to UK internet users

Internet users are being warned about cold callers who offer to fix
viruses but then install software to steal personal information.

Campaign group Get Safe Online said a quarter of the people it had questioned
had received such calls, many suspected to have been from organised crime
gangs.
