Microsoft has issued the first service pack (SP) for Windows 7. The update brings with it the usual reliability and security enhancements users have come to expect and is the first major tweak to the OS since its release back in 2009. "Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is an important update that includes previously released security, performance, and stability updates for Windows 7," Microsoft said.

It will go above 4 per cent when the recent value added tax increase is included. Inflation expectations are now rising. The Bank has resolutely refused to put up rates, because it regards the causes as beyond its control. But this approach has more than run its course, and raising rates should be put off no longer.

Particularly since there's a good chance of a vicious circle developing.

Staying innovative after being left for dead

Behind Ralf Herbrich's desk is a row of wooden plaques - one for each of the patents he has won for Microsoft.
They seem like a lot - until you see a pyramid of marble cubes on the window sill for even more patents.
Those are awarded internally by Microsoft, as it takes a long time for the plaques to come from the US Patents Office. Among the patents awarded to this enthusiastic researcher from the former East Germany is one for "Bayesian modelling," which was used in a driving game for the XBox games console.

Revenue gets tough on late payment of tax bills

HMRC has taken a tougher line on businesses wanting to pay their tax bills late, doubling the percentage of tax deferral applications that it turned down last year. The taxman rejected 5.8pc of all VAT, PAYE and Corporation tax deferral applications in 2010, up from the 2.7pc rate seen during 2009. The total number of rejections rose from 6,760 to 8,550.

Enterprise UK to call it a day

O2 to build free Wi-Fi network across the UK

LaMagna went on to acquire a high-powered education and become a serial entrepreneurial failure. His crazy career flops included a digital dating service, Cupid Computer, and a water bed store called Aquarack. Apparently equipped with a reverse Midas touch, he also found time to invent a contraption that blinked to music, and tried to convert drive-in cinemas to drive-in discotheques. No luck there.
