HMRC has taken a tougher line on businesses wanting to pay their tax bills late, doubling the percentage of tax deferral applications that it turned down last year. The taxman rejected 5.8pc of all VAT, PAYE and Corporation tax deferral applications in 2010, up from the 2.7pc rate seen during 2009. The total number of rejections rose from 6,760 to 8,550.

Amazon now sells more ebooks, through its Kindle Book Store, than it does paperbacks. This year the company expects to sell more than 8 million Kindles, according to some estimates.
