Banks are set to record profits in 2010 in an environment where it is excruciatingly difficult to obtain finance for businesses, small or large.
Most of this profit will likely come from increased mortgage volumes and increased pricing for business lending.However banks can’t not lend to businesses forever. Customers are paying down loans every day so loan books get smaller over time and hence the income stream gets smaller. For business bankers the price rise in the past 18 months has compensated for this and allowed the banks to sit back and understand where the lending risks lie in the economy without taking any new risks on.
