Behind Ralf Herbrich's desk is a row of wooden plaques - one for each of the patents he has won for Microsoft.
They seem like a lot - until you see a pyramid of marble cubes on the window sill for even more patents.
Those are awarded internally by Microsoft, as it takes a long time for the plaques to come from the US Patents Office. Among the patents awarded to this enthusiastic researcher from the former East Germany is one for "Bayesian modelling," which was used in a driving game for the XBox games console.

Vodafone in its modern, multinational form was to a large extent created by Sir Chris Gent, an ambitious Brit who went on a takeover spree around a decade ago.
Whether or not that takeover spree was good for shareholders or for the UK is an argument for another day.

But it is striking that with the appointment today of Gerard Kleisterlee as its chairman, Vodafone - the UK's second biggest company - is now chaired by a Dutchman and run by an Italian, Vittorio Colao.
For the UK's biggest multinational companies, it is now a clear trend for Brits to be in the minority in the most senior positions.

News Corporation's Rupert Murdoch is extending his media empire once again - this time with a digital newspaper for the iPad called the Daily.
Mr Murdoch told an audience at the Guggenheim Museum in New York that he hoped it would be an "indispensable source of news" in the tablet era.
