As someone who believes very strongly in the value of first impressions, I’m always fascinated to hear what new people make of this place after their initial week or so. (Admittedly, the only problem is that the more interesting their observation, the less likely they are to share it with me, particularly when they’re new. But still.)
There are three main reasons why I like doing this. One, when you’ve been in the middle of something for so long and know all the people so well, it’s hard to think about them objectively – so it’s nice to see everything through a fresh pair of eyes. Two, if the newbie concerned has already spotted something that it took me ages to work out, the chances are that their judgement is going to come in handy to me. And three, I’m nosy.
